Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

In March to June every year, there is a tourist destination in Japan that suddenly 'comes alive'. It's called the Tateyama  Kurobe Alpine Route . This is a popular route that connects  Toyama and Shinano Omachi near Nagano. What are the attractions to see? An ice wall over 10 meters high so that tourists can do the Snow Wall Walk (yuki no otani).

In 2017, this route opened on April 15, but my advice is not to come in the first few weeks because it is likely that what you will see is not a wall of ice, but a sea of people.

Route

We complete this Alpin Route in one day, from morning to evening. In total, it takes at least 6 hours to enjoy this one-way route. If you take the round trip route, it takes 8-9 hours.

My suggestion is to stay in Kanazawa, Toyama, or Nagano. You can choose to go back and forth from Tokyo, but you will risk arriving home in Tokyo late at night. Also, Kanazawa or Toyama are also fun to explore (wait for Javamilk's article about Kanazawa and Takayama), also if you want to continue your trip to Shirakawa-Go Village, Hida, or Takayama.

I'll give you an example if you choose to stay in Toyama. If you stay in Kanazawa, just take the train from Kanazawa to Toyama (about 30 minutes by train).

The order of transportation and tourist attractions we see:

Toyama, take the Toyama Chiho Railroad, 67 minutes, arrive at:
Tateyama Station, continue by Tateyama Cable Car (7 minutes)
Bijodaira, continue with Highland Bus (50 minutes)
Murodo, arrive at the Murodo Wall snow wall which is the icon of this place. You can enjoy the snow walk as long as you want, including lunch here. After you finish you can continue with the Tateyama Tunnel Trolley Bus down through the mountain for 10 minutes.
Daikanbo, connecting Ropeway (Gondola)
Kurobedaira, take the cable car again
Kurobeko, once you get here your option is to walk and enjoy Kurobe Dam.
Kurobe Dam, take the trolley bus again
Ogizawa, this is the last point for you to enjoy the tour, go home by Alpico Express bus to
Shinano Omachi or you can go to Nagano.
It seems that there are quite a lot of routes and modes of transportation, that's why it's expensive.

Ticket
Please note that this route is expensive for a day trip! One-way fare is ¥9,000 if you buy the Kurobe Option Ticket combo . Not covered by the Japan Rail Pass.Best holiday packages

If you want a round trip option (so to Kurobe Dam, back to Toyama) then you can't use the Kurobe Option Ticket above. The options are to buy a normal ticket, or buy the Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass (¥17,500 for 5 days). Kurobe Option Ticket can be purchased at JR Toyama Station, JR East Shinjuku Station, JR East Tokyo Station, JR Offices at Narita and Haneda Airport, and at JR Offices in Kyoto, Osaka, and Kanazawa.

Train journey from Tokyo - Nagano - Toyama - Kanazawa using Hokuriku Shinkansen train which ticket is separate again. Tokyo-Nagano about 1.5 hours, Tokyo-Kanazawa (2.5 hours) with Kagayaki Shinkansen. You buy point-to-point tickets or this train is covered if you have JR Pass or JR Hokuriku Pass (seat reservation mandatory).
