Transportation from Haneda Airport to Tokyo
Tokyo has 2 arrival airports: Narita International Airport (NRT) which is some distance away and Haneda Airport (HND) which is relatively closer to the city center.
It depends on the airline you use, even Japan Airlines has the option of landing at Haneda or Narita in its flight schedule.
If you can choose, I suggest you choose Haneda Airport as your arrival/departure airport. The airport is smaller, so from getting off the plane to baggage claim, sometimes the express only takes 15-20 minutes. Because the location is still 'Tokyo', it takes less than 1 hour to get to the city center, and certainly the transportation costs are cheaper than landing in Narita.
Apart from the airport bus, what I want to discuss here is the option of using the train. There are 2 types of trains that you can use: Keikyu Lines and Tokyo Monorail.
Keikyu Line
After getting this Pasmo, then you go to the train platform. Directions are very clear so you don't need to ask or be confused. Even when you turn right in the elevator queue you will be given directions.
Keikyu lines have branches, some go to Yokohama, some go to Shinagawa-Sengakuji-Asakusa (Tokyo). So don't make the wrong ride, once again look at the board on the train platform before boarding.
Use applications such as Hyperdia or Jorudan (download on the App Store or Play Store) to plan your trip from Haneda to the destination station near your accommodation, because it definitely involves interchanges with other subway trains or JR Lines. Pay attention to minute details when you see the signboard for trains arriving/departing because different minutes can mean different destinations, even though the platform is the same.
There are several types of Keikyu trains, the ones with the airplane icon are Airport and Airport Limited Express, with fewer stops than the regular Limited Express, and Local (all-stop). Pay attention to the coloring on the map below, later you will consistently see it on the sign on the train platform.
So, for example, if you want to take Shinagawa or Sengakuji, you can take any type of train, as long as it's not the one going to Yokohama.
The Keikyu train will change to the Asakusa line (code A, red line on the subway map below) starting from Sengakuji, passing through Shimbasi, Nihombashi, to Asakusa or Oshiage, there is no need to change trains. Just sit still in the train.
Use an IC Card (Pasmo/Suica) to take this train from Haneda, fares are calculated per station. For example, Haneda to Shinagawa is around ¥300 (11 minutes), destination Asakusa is ¥555 (32 minutes). It's cheap, right?
Starting August 2, 2023, sales of Pasmo/Suica cards will be temporarily suspended. An alternative is to buy a Welcome Suica Card or Pasmo Passport.
The Keikyu Line is a non-JR train, so you cannot use the Subway Pass or JR Japan Pass specifically for the section from Haneda to Sengakuji. If you want to utilize the subway pass, then from Haneda you have to get off at Sengakuji, exit the gate (tap out IC Card), then re-enter (tap-in) using the subway pass and continue on the same train line (Asakusa Line).
Tokyo Monorail
Use the Tokyo Monorail if you want to continue with the JR Yamanote Line. Once you have finished collecting your luggage, if you turn right to take the Keikyu Line, then turn left to take the Monorail. The ticket machine is right next to the entrance gate. If you buy an IC Card from this machine, select the Purchase Suica Card menu. After tap-in, take the escalator to the platform.
The final station for the Monorail is Hamamatsucho (13 minutes from Haneda), exit from the gate and enter again at the JR Yamanote gate, for the destination Tokyo Station (¥660, +6 minutes), Shibuya (¥700), Shinjuku, etc. Pay attention to the loop because it is a loop, the destinations to Shinjuku and Tokyo Station are on different platforms. JR Japan Pass and Tokyo Wide Pass can be used for this line.
